Why analyze a company's patent portfolio?
In a patent search you will have access to all patents published by companies or universities. You will also have access to the patent classes in which the companies have published their patents. These classes are of interest because they indicate in which fields of activity the patents have been published and therefore on which strategic axes the companies are working. It is therefore interesting to take these classifications into account.
To study the patent portfolio of a player, first select the desired actor (a company or a university) and then select “Patent Class” in the “Actor type” filter in order to display all the sub-categories in which the player's patents have been published. It is possible to place them manually so as to be able to easily identify the major class groups.
This will make it easy to understand which strategic area the company is working on.
If you want to know what recent areas the company is working on, use the “publication date” filter.
Using a table from the web or the treeview on your Geotrend platform (in the second stage of creating a patent search you have access to the treeview; we advise you to open it in a second tab so that you can consult it throughout your study), you can identify the name of each of the major classes.
This information allows you to create a table that references the existing patent classes, their names and the number of associated patents or a graph that allows you to quickly visualize the percentage of patents published in each class.
